corpus christi law firm Steven W. Ellis was born on September 18, 1959 in Lincoln, Nebraska, where his father was stationed in the United States Air Force. Mr. Ellis's family settled in South Texas, where he has spent the majority of his life. Mr. Ellis graduated from Texas A&M University in 1981 with a BA degree (Magna Cum Laude), and graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1984. Mr. Ellis was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in November of 1984. Mr. Ellis is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell, and has been Board Certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1991.

Mr. Ellis began his oil and gas practice with Kleberg, Dyer, Redford & Weil, a large Corpus Christi firm, in the areas of title examination and litigation. During the downturn of the late 1980's, Mr. Ellis accepted a position as an energy attorney in San Diego, California, and was admitted to the California Bar in 1988. He practiced before the California Public Utilities Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. After returning to Corpus Christi, in 1992 Mr. Ellis began his own oil and gas firm, Ellis & Prehn, P.C., focused on title examination and oil and gas litigation matters. His principal clients were EOG Resources, Inc., ARCO Oil & Gas Company, Union Pacific Resources Company, Oryx Energy Company, Shell Western E&P Inc., and a host of smaller independent producers and royalty owners.

In 2005, Mr. Ellis accepted an in-house counsel position with EOG Resources, Inc., where he was responsible for the legal function for the Corpus Christi Division, including approval/negotiation of material contracts, business/legal advice as well as management of outside counsel in litigation matters. In 2008, EOG drilled the first Eagle Ford horizontal oil producer and commenced lease acquisition across 7 counties. Mr. Ellis reviewed, negotiated or managed the legal approval for approximately 2,200 oil and gas leases covering over 500,000 acres of the Eagle Ford trend.

In Mr. Ellis was promoted to Managing Counsel responsible for the legal staff of the Corpus Christi and the newly created San Antonio Division. Mr. Ellis advised on significant issues for EOG across the Eagle Ford trend, such as unit configuration, royalty computation and deductions, marketing issues, government relations, Railroad Commission compliance and field rules, SWD well issues, pipeline and midstream projects and numerous others. He worked with outside counsel on the Klotzman allocation well contested proceeding and worked with industry groups to formulate their position on allocation well matters. Mr. Ellis was appointed to Railroad Commissioner David Porter's Eagle Ford Task Force, on which he served from 2010 until 2016, and participated in industry discussions regarding proposed allocation well legislation.

In addition, Mr. Ellis negotiated (along with a management team), EOG's King Ranch joint venture with ExxonMobil covering 460,000 acres, and managed legal issues arising from that JV. In 2016, Mr. Ellis left EOG and took a year to travel and in 2017 he returned to private practice with the firm of Upton, Mickits & Heymann, LLP.

He is married to Sharon Ellis and has four children who are pursuing their own careers and families.
